In January we make resolutions and reflect on what a new calendar year will mean in our lives but in September we end up going through many of these same rituals.

Setting up my classroom each fall is an opportunity to get rid of unused items, like cleaning out a closet at home. Making a curriculum map with my team is like setting intentions for the new year. Over the summer, when my daily commitments are fewer, I’m able to consider new research and ideas with a clear mind. I go into September ready to set my resolutions and try new techniques.

This year will undoubtedly be different than any before, but this ritual will be the same for me. I’m excited to try introducing sounds and phonemic awareness skills in a more intentional manner. I’m looking forward to using technology in my classroom-something I absolutely didn’t do until I was forced to by COVID.

I’m meeting my students’ families next week and I can’t wait to show them I’m excited and refreshed for this new year. I know excitement is contagious and I want them to feel inspired and hopeful for this school instead of leaving my room with doubts.

If you were to write out some intentions or resolutions for this school year, either as a parent or educator (or both!), what would they be?
